Guitar Building Classes
About 20 years ago I began to think about the possibility of building my own guitars from scratch. At first it seemed like a rediculous thought. But after reading my first lutherie book, I found the whole process of cutting, carving and shaping the wood into what would become a useable piece of art absolutely intoxiacating and magical. I began researching, buying books, buying guitar parts, watching videos, and reading all the rediculous debates in the lutherie forums but I DID nothing.
I thought about it for years. I bought more parts, pieces and tone wood. I read a lot more books. I watched videos, I debated on the forums, but I still DID nothing.
What I finally realized is that this project would be so much easier with some sort of guidance. I wanted someone to take me step-by-step through the building process. I wanted someone that could explain potential problems. I wanted someone to show me how to fix my mistakes. I wanted to build a guitar that not only looked good but sounded great. I knew that "book learnin" could not compare to real life experience.
Well, back then there was not anyone around to help. Finally I just started building. I built my first guitar (and it is still one of my favorite guitars to play!!), then I built another, and another, and another.... I found out that building guitars was not as hard as I thought it would be.
My classes make things easy and simple to follow. It works like this. I do not use a lecture format. I work one-on-one with each student. I explain each step in detail, demonstrate how we are going to get that step done, then, when you are comfortable, I let you work on completing that step while I go help another student.
I have daytime and evening classes available from Monday thru Saturday each week. We simply find a day and time that works best for your schedule and then you come once a week for 3 hours at a time until you finish your guitar. Each class is only $40 so there is no pressure to rush through your build. Since the class is not in a lecture format, you can take a week or two off for holidays and not worry about falling behind.
- Classes are once a week for 3hours (take more classes each week if you wish)
- Cost is only $40 per class, materials not included
- Materials for a typical guitar is only about $400 not including electronics
-You will make every part of the guitar from scratch! NO KITS ALLOWED!
- Build an OM, a Dreadnought, a 3/4 size guitar, or one of several other styles
- Work at your own pace. Taking time off for holidays etc. will not put you behind.
- Daytime class times are from 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm Monday thru Saturday
- Evening class times M-F are 6pm-9pm.
- Other times may be available in the future so let me know if none of these days work.
